Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
Copperfield chimney cap installation in Marietta typically runs $385 to $740 installed, depending on the cap model, flue size, and roof access. We stock Copperfield-compatible caps and stainless steel mounting hardware on our trucks, and most Marietta jobs are completed in a single visit. If your Copperfield cap is rusted through, missing its mesh screen, or shifted off the flue during a storm, the fix is straightforward: remove the old cap, verify the flue dimensions, and secure a properly sized replacement.
Most homeowners discover the problem after a storm blows the cap loose, or when they spot rust streaks down the chimney crown. Others notice birds flapping inside the flue or find squirrel nesting material around the fireplace damper. The cap may have held up for years, but Georgia’s humidity and storm cycles eventually take a toll on even the best stainless hardware.
Here’s what to know before you replace yours: Copperfield caps come in specific flue size ranges, and a cap that’s slightly off can shift in high wind or leave gaps where rain and embers get through. We measure inside the flue and across the crown before recommending anything, and you’ll get the photo documentation to see exactly what we found.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Most Copperfield chimney caps we install in Marietta fall into three groups: single-flue caps, multi-flue caps, and the Copperfield Legacy and Vacu-Stack series. The single-flue caps mount directly to a round or square flue tile, while multi-flue caps span two or more flues across the crown. Vacu-Stack models use the wind to create an upward draft, which matters on Marietta chimneys that already have drafting issues.
The compatibility gotcha: a Copperfield cap designed for a 13″ x 13″ flue tile won’t reliably fit a 12″ x 12″ or a 13″ x 18″ without an adapter, and adapters themselves become another fail point. We see this often enough that we measure every flue twice before we ever pull a cap off the truck. The model tag is usually stamped on the underside of the cap’s base plate or on the mesh band; if it’s gone, we match by dimensions and bolt pattern.
OEM Copperfield replacement parts are worth the price when the cap itself is still structurally sound and you only need a new mesh screen or mounting bracket. If the base plate is rotted or the draft-assist cone is dented beyond function, a full replacement is cheaper than patching a cap that will fail again in a year or two. Aftermarket stainless caps built to Copperfield’s dimensions can be a good value, but we prefer full stainless rather than painted galvanized for Marietta’s wet springs and pollen-heavy seasons.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks on the chimney crown or cap base. This is the earliest sign. Copperfield caps are made from stainless or galvanized steel, but the fasteners and the base plate edge take the most weather exposure. Once rust starts, the structural metal near the bolts is thinning.
- The cap has shifted or sits at an angle. Wind from a strong thunderstorm can loosen the mounting bolts, especially if the previous installer used masonry screws that were slightly oversized. A tilted cap lets rain hit the flue and run down inside the chase.
- Birds, bats, or squirrel activity near the flue. A torn mesh screen or a gap under the cap base is an open invitation. We’ve pulled squirrels out of Marietta chimneys with the mesh screen bent back at the corner, usually where the screen meets the base plate.
- Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney or a damp smell in the firebox. A failed cap directs rain straight into the flue. If your copper or stainless liner then catches that water, you may also see rust spots on the damper or firebox floor.
- Draft problems that got worse. A cap that is partially blocked by leaves, pine needles, or nesting material will starve the fire of air. The fireplace pulls smoke back into the room instead of up and out, and it’s usually not the damper.
If you see more than one of these at once, the cap has likely been failing for a while. A quick phone photo of the cap from the yard or a safe roofline is enough for us to tell you whether you’re looking at a simple swap or something else entirely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Copperfield-compatible stainless cap installed on a one-story Marietta home, you should budget $385 to $525 all in. A multi-flue cap or a Vacu-Stack draft-assist model runs $540 to $740 installed, with the higher end reflecting taller chimneys, harder roof access, or a flue that needs custom sizing. The wildcard is when the old cap bolts have rusted into the crown or the crown itself needs patching around the cap base; we’ll price that before touching anything.
Every Copperfield cap installation we do in Marietta includes removal of the old cap, flue measurement and crown inspection, new stainless mounting hardware, installation, and before-and-after photos. You’ll get a written price before work starts, and the work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap shifts, loosens, or fails within that window, we return and fix it free. Nobody at Hadley Chimney Marietta, led by Cory Mitchell, wants a callback for a cap that moved two inches in a spring storm, so we mount them to stay.
A note on materials: Copperfield caps are not all stainless. The painted galvanized versions are cheaper up front but show their age within a few Marietta summers. We quote full stainless by default because the price difference is modest and the lifespan is double or more.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and your roofline is walkable, you can safely inspect the cap from the roof’s edge or with binoculars from the ground. Look for rust at the fasteners, a torn mesh screen, or a cap that moves when you press on it with a long tool. What you should not do is stand on a wet or mossy Marietta roof, lean over the ridge to reach a cap, or try to unbolt a rusted cap while balancing on a ladder. Falls from even a single-story roof can be life-changing.
The second reason to call us is measurement. A Copperfield cap that is off by half an inch in either direction will not seal properly, and fixing a mis-measured cap means buying a second one. We measure, we stock, we install, and we warranty the whole thing. Call (762) 249-4619 for a straight quote, and we’ll send a photo of your existing cap before we touch anything.
FAQs
In Georgia’s humidity and storm cycles, a stainless Copperfield-compatible cap typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the mesh screen or fasteners need attention; painted galvanized versions usually show significant rust within 4 to 6 years. Coastal-adjacent humidity isn’t the issue here, but the repeated wet-hot-dry swing of a Marietta summer plus acidic rain from evening thunderstorms is. Call (762) 249-4619 and we’ll tell you if yours is worth saving or ready for retirement.
Yes, if the base plate and frame are still solid. We regularly replace just the mesh screen or the mounting bolts, which runs $95 to $180 in most Marietta cases. But if the base plate is rusting through or the cap has started to separate at the welds, a repair will not buy you more than a season or two. We’ll show you the rust in a photo before we recommend a direction.
A straightforward single-flue Copperfield cap swap takes 45 minutes to an hour once the tech is on the roof. Add another 30 minutes if we’re replacing rusted bolts, cleaning out nesting material, or patching the crown around the base. Most Marietta jobs are one visit, and we handle the entire thing without you needing to be home.
We keep the most common Copperfield-compatible single-flue and multi-flue sizes on our trucks, along with stainless bolts, brackets, and mesh screens. If your flue is an odd size or you need a Vacu-Stack model, we can usually have the exact part within 48 hours. We also stock parts for DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco systems, so if the cap isn’t the only thing failing, we’ll have the full picture in one visit. Call (762) 249-4619 for a free estimate.
