Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Damper Repair: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
If your Copperfield chimney damper won’t close tightly, rattles in the wind, or has a handle that spins without catching, we can usually repair or replace it the same week you call. In Marietta, a Copperfield damper repair or replacement typically runs $140 to $380 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the existing assembly or swapping in a new unit. Most homeowners discover the problem in October or November, the first cold night they reach up to close the damper and feel no resistance at all.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes two damper lines we see constantly in Marietta: their cast-iron throat dampers, which sit just above the firebox, and their top-sealing dampers, which mount at the chimney crown and seal with a silicone gasket. The throat dampers come in standard widths from 24 to 48 inches, and the most common failure there is the cast-iron plate warping from years of heat cycling. The top-sealing line, including their energy-saving models, fails differently, usually at the cable or the spring mechanism inside the cap assembly.
Unlike generic dampers you’ll find at a big-box store, Copperfield throat dampers use a specific pivot pin diameter and a handle notch pattern that doesn’t always match universal replacement kits. We’ve seen Marietta homeowners buy a “universal” damper kit, spend a Saturday fighting it, and call us after the plate binds against the smoke shelf. If you look up inside your firebox, you’ll usually see a stamped model number or a small metal tag on the damper frame near the hinge. That number gets us the right match the first time.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins without resistance. The pivot pin or the cast-iron ear on the damper plate has snapped. This is the most common Copperfield failure we see in Marietta, and it means the damper is stuck in whatever position it failed in, usually open.
- Cold air pours down the chimney even with the damper closed. The plate may be warped or the gasket on a top-sealing model may have dried out and cracked. Georgia humidity accelerates gasket wear, so this shows up here more than in drier climates.
- You hear a metallic rattle when the wind picks up. On top-sealing Copperfield dampers, the cap assembly has a spring that keeps tension on the cable. When that spring loses tension, the whole cap chatters in the wind.
- The damper plate sticks in one position. Creosote (the flammable tar buildup that makes chimneys a fire risk) has caked onto the pivot points, or the plate has rusted against the frame. Forcing it can snap the handle clean off.
- You feel a draft and smell old smoke even days after the last fire. The damper seat, where the plate rests against the frame, has corroded or lost its seal. Smoke from the flue lingers and finds its way back into the living room.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look up at the damper with a flashlight, wiggle the handle gently, and note whether the plate moves at all. If you have a top-sealing Copperfield model, you can check whether the cable moves freely when you pull the handle. But once you’re dealing with a snapped pivot, a bound plate, or a failed spring inside the cap assembly, DIY goes downhill fast. The damper sits above the firebox where the smoke shelf catches anything you drop, and the plate itself is heavy cast iron. Cory Mitchell has dug more than one snapped screw out of a smoke shelf in Marietta. We would rather you call before that happens.
FAQs
A Copperfield throat damper typically lasts 12 to 20 years in Marietta, though top-sealing models often need spring or gasket attention around the 8-to-10-year mark. Georgia humidity shortens gasket life compared to drier regions, so have it checked during your annual sweep. Call (762) 249-4619 and we’ll tell you what your damper looks like and what it needs.
Roughly two-thirds of the Copperfield dampers we see can be repaired with new pivot hardware or a rebuilt handle assembly, especially if the plate itself is still straight. We only recommend full replacement when the plate is warped or the frame has corroded beyond a clean seat.
Most throat damper repairs or replacements take 45 minutes to an hour and a half, and we can usually schedule it within a few days in Marietta. Top-sealing damper swaps take a bit longer because of the roof work. We’ll send a photo of the finished repair to your phone before we leave.
We stock common Copperfield replacement hardware, pivot pins, handles, and top-sealing damper springs on our trucks. If your model needs a less common part, we order it and usually have it installed within a week. We also work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco parts when the job calls for them.
