Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Marietta Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Marietta typically runs $220 to $410 installed, depending on the model and whether we’re rebuilding the frame or replacing the blade assembly outright. We stock Gelco-compatible damper parts on the truck, and most repairs happen same-day. Owners usually find us because the damper won’t fully close in summer (hot air pouring into the house) or won’t open in winter, leaving a cold draft every time they walk past the fireplace.
Gelco dampers are top-sealing chimney dampers made of cast aluminum, and they do two jobs most people never think about: sealing the flue, and keeping rain and critters out. When they fail, it’s rarely the whole unit. Usually it’s the cable mechanism, the mounting frame, or the gasket that’s degraded. That’s the repair we handle most often across Marietta, from homes near the Square to neighborhoods on the east and west sides of town.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco dampers aren’t one-size-fits-all, and the compatibility gotcha is the size. Gelco makes dampers in standard flue sizes from about 7 inches up to 16 inches; the unit is sized to the inside of the flue tile or chimney pipe, not the outside of the chimney. If the replacement damper doesn’t match the flue dimensions, it either won’t open fully or won’t seat properly, and you’ll still get a draft.
There are two identification paths. First, if the damper still has a visible label, look for the Gelco stamp on the mounting bracket or handle assembly. Second, we measure the flue opening directly, then match the damper to those dimensions. Most Marietta homes with Gelco dampers were installed somewhere between 1995 and 2015. Original units are still manufactured, but honest truth: for many Gelco models, a high-quality aftermarket replacement performs identically because the design is a straightforward cable-driven blade on a spring hinge. Cory Mitchell typically recommends OEM parts when the frame is still sound, and an aftermarket blade assembly when we’re swapping both.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- Draft or hot air around the fireplace in summer – The damper blade isn’t fully seating. This is often a stretched control cable; over time, the cable loses tension, and the blade can’t be pulled closed completely.
- Rusted or stuck control handle – The handle assembly sits inside the firebox and gets hit with heat and occasional moisture. Corrosion makes the handle bind, and forcing it will snap the cable. If you’re fighting the handle, stop turning it.
- Water or rust stains on the firebox floor – A failing top-seal gasket lets water through. In Marietta, where we get hard spring rains and summer thunderstorms that roll in fast, a tiny gasket failure turns into rust spots on the fire brick quickly.
- You hear the damper “clank” but the draft is still there – The cable is moving, but the blade isn’t. That’s usually a broken hinge pin or the cable has pulled free from the blade bracket.
- Visible rust or pitting on the blade itself – Gelco blades are cast aluminum, but the hinge springs and brackets are not. Once those start corroding, the blade doesn’t pivot correctly, and the repair is more involved.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Marietta, a Gelco damper repair or replacement lands between $220 and $410 in most cases. Simple cable replacements sit at the low end. Full frame and blade assembly replacements, where we’re setting a new damper into the flue, push toward the high end. If the flue tile itself is damaged, that’s a separate conversation, and we’ll show you photos before recommending anything.
Every job includes the written price before we start, the parts, labor, and a written guarantee. The repair is covered for 365 days under our Done Right Promise. If it fails within that window, the second visit is free, no fine print. We also send before-and-after photos of the work, so you’re looking at the actual damper and frame, not just a receipt. That’s The Relay Visibility Guarantee, and we’ve applied it to every repair since we started doing this work in Marietta. Hadley Chimney Marietta is an independent service provider and isn’t affiliated with Gelco, but we keep their common sizes and parts in regular rotation on the truck.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect the handle and cable from inside the firebox. Remove the fireplace grate, shine a flashlight up at the damper, and check for visible rust, a slack cable, or a blade that doesn’t move when you turn the handle gently. If the cable is slack or the blade jams, stop there. The damper sits at the top of the chimney, several feet above the roof line, and replacing it means working with ladders, flue measurements, and roof access. That’s where DIY can go sideways fast.
Climbing onto a roof in Marietta after a weekday of rain is not worth the risk, especially when the part itself isn’t the expensive piece. The real cost is the labor and the know-how to mount a damper that seals correctly. If you want a hand, call us at (762) 249-4619. We’ll give you a straight answer and a written price before anyone starts.
FAQs
A Gelco damper typically lasts 12 to 20 years in the Marietta area. Our humid summers put more stress on the hinge springs and gasket than a dry climate would, so the gasket often fails before the blade itself. If the damper is over 15 years old and showing rust, you’re probably near the end of its usable life.
Yes. A snapped cable or a compressed gasket can be repaired on its own, and we do cable replacements often. If the blade is cracked or the hinge has seized, a full blade assembly swap makes more sense than trying to patch it. Call (762) 249-4619 for an honest assessment.
Most Gelco damper repairs take 45 minutes to an hour and a half, from roof access to the final photo. We carry common parts on the truck, so there’s usually no second trip to a supplier. If the flue tile needs work, that extends the job, and we’ll show you exactly why before proceeding.
We keep Gelco cable assemblies, handles, and replacement blades for the most common flue sizes on the truck. For larger or less common sizes, we can usually have the part within a few days. Alongside Gelco, we work with DuraFlex and HeatShield materials, so if the chimney needs more than a damper, we’ve got the right parts on hand. Call (762) 249-4619 and Cory will gladly confirm whether we have your size before you book.
