Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement: The Marietta Owner’s Guide

If you have a DuraFlex liner that’s cracked, corroded, or simply at the end of its service life, a replacement flue liner in Marietta typically runs $2,900 to $5,800 installed, depending on chimney height, access, and liner diameter. We stock DuraFlex-compatible replacement parts on the truck and can usually complete the full swap in a single visit. Most Marietta homeowners discover the problem during an annual sweep, when our camera inspection shows delamination or pinholes in the inner wall, or when rust flakes start falling into the firebox.

Here’s the honest picture: a DuraFlex liner doesn’t just stop working overnight. It degrades over years of heating and cooling cycles, and the failures usually show up at the seams, the connection points, or wherever condensation sat longest. The good news is this is a known part with a known fix, and we’ve been installing these replacements in Cobb County homes since 2003.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes a few distinct liner series, and they are not all interchangeable. The two you’ll most often find in Marietta chimneys are the DuraFlex 316L (stainless steel, rated for gas and oil) and the DuraFlex AL (aluminum, strictly for gas appliances only). There’s also the DuraFlex Pro line, which uses a heavier gauge stainless wall and is what we recommend for wood-burning fireplaces and stoves where creosote and higher flue temps are constant.

The compatibility gotcha most people hit: an AL liner cannot be swapped for 316L without checking the appliance first. If your furnace or water heater was originally vented through aluminum and you upgrade to stainless, the diameter and connector hardware change with it. We always measure the existing liner’s inner diameter, check the appliance BTU rating, and match the replacement to what the system was designed to carry. DuraFlex stamps size and type on the liner wall every few feet, but after ten or fifteen years, that stamp is often unreadable. That’s when the camera goes in and we take the measurements ourselves.

OEM DuraFlex parts are what we install by default. Aftermarket equivalents exist for connectors and top plates, but we’ve seen too many fitment issues with off-brand couplers that leak condensation. For the liner itself, we use DuraFlex-compatible factory parts so the joints seal the way the system was engineered to seal.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

  • Rust flakes or metallic debris in the firebox. This means the inner liner wall is spalling, usually where condensation pooled at the bottom of the vertical run. We see this most in Marietta homes where the chimney runs through an unheated chase and cool-down is rapid, creating more condensation than the liner was designed to shed.
  • Visible moisture or staining on the chimney exterior above the roofline. When a liner perforates, warm flue gases escape into the masonry cavity and condense. You’ll notice dark streaks on brick or stone, sometimes accompanied by a faint acidic smell.
  • White or greenish deposits where the liner connects to the appliance. This is condensate leaking back through the connector joint. It corrodes the connection and, left alone, will eat through the appliance’s flue collar too.
  • Exhaust smell inside the house when the furnace or fireplace runs. A breached liner can no longer contain and vent combustion gases properly. This in the strongest terms is a safety issue, not a wait-and-see item. Carbon monoxide follows the path of least resistance.
  • Camera inspection shows delamination or pinholes. The most reliable sign, and the one where we show you the photo before recommending anything. Cory Mitchell’s rule on this: “I’ll send you the photo first – then we’ll talk about what it means.” We don’t ask you to take our word for it. You’ll see it on your own phone.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A DuraFlex flue liner replacement in Marietta runs between $2,900 and $5,800 installed, and here’s what drives the spread. Chimney height is the biggest variable: a single-story ranch in East Cobb may have a 15-foot run, while a two-story off Whitlock Avenue could be double that. Liner diameter matters too, with 6-inch being the most common for wood stoves and fireplaces, and 5-inch for most gas water heaters. Finally, access plays a role. Steep roof pitches or tight chase access add labor time.

Item Typical Range
DuraFlex 316L liner (per foot, materials only) $90 – $140
Connectors, top plate, rain cap $150 – $400
Labor (removal + install) $1,200 – $2,800
Full replacement, typical Marietta home $2,900 – $5,800

Every quote you get from us is a written price before any work starts. That includes the liner, connectors, top plate, rain cap, removal of the old liner, and a camera verification pass after install so you see that the job is done right. And it’s all covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails, we fix it, free of charge, on a second visit.

We’re an independent chimney company based in Marietta, not a DuraFlex dealer or affiliate. That means we recommend what actually fits your system, not what moves inventory.

DIY or Call Us?

The part of this job an owner can safely do: check the firebox for debris, note any staining, and keep a record of when the chimney was last swept. That’s genuinely useful information to have when you call. The actual liner replacement is not a DIY job, and we’ll say it plainly: you’re working on a roof, often on a ladder, handling a corrugated stainless sleeve that can be 25 to 35 feet long and wants to fight you the entire way down the flue. Getting the connectors sealed correctly takes experience, and an improperly sealed liner joint is a carbon monoxide pathway into your home. This is the sum total of chimney work where you want trained hands and a camera before and after.

If you suspect your DuraFlex liner is done, call (762) 249-4619. We’ll book a time, show up in a tracked window, and send you the photos so you can make the call with your own eyes.
